OIG Releases Report: Compounded Drugs Under Medicare Part B: Payment and Oversight
The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) recently released a report - Compounded Drugs Under Medicare Part B: Payment and Oversight - that focuses more upon compounding reimbursement; but, also touches on FDA oversight.
On preliminary review, IACP's biggest takeaway is that, unlike for manufactured drug products, there is no consistent method for billing and reimbursing compounded preparations. Adds David G. Miller, RPh, IACP's Executive Vice President, "That's something our members are all too familiar with -- variations among plans, variations among insurers and PBMs, variations even between state Medicaid agencies and Medicare Medicare Administrative Contractors - but also is reflective of the fact that traditionally compounded preparations weren't as commonly prescribed nor commonly submitted for reimbursement."
