2013 OSHA Update & Live Training Webinar – November 18 & 26

IACP’s Collaboration with the Tennessee Pharmacists Research and Education Foundation Presents:

2013 Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Update & Live Training Webinar

Are you a pharmacist providing immunizations or CLIA-waived testing services or a pharmacy technician assisting in these services? If you are at any risk for exposure to bloodborne pathogens, you are required to have live OSHA training every year.

OSHA’s fines for non-compliance can exceed $90,000. You can comply with OSHA’s training requirements for less than $70. (You do the math.)

Even if you participate in an OSHA training program every year, you are not in compliance with OSHA’s requirements if the training doesn’t have a LIVE component. In response to requests from pharmacists, the Tennessee Pharmacists Research and Education Foundation (TPREF) is offering an ACPE-accredited OSHA training webinar that meets all of OSHA’s training requirements. The 2013 OSHA Update can protect you and your pharmacy practice site against potentially devastating OSHA fines—and your pharmacy site can continue to protect the public against potentially devastating disease.

The webinar program is presented online by Stephan Foster, PharmD, FAPhA, FNAP. Dr. Foster is a retired Captain in the U.S. Public Health Service and is on faculty at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy. He is on the Speakers’ Bureau for Merck and Roche and is a consultant for GSK and Sanofi-Pasteur.

For your convenience, the program is offered on the following dates and times:

  • Mon., Nov. 18, 2013 -- 12 noon CT (1 p.m. ET)
  • Mon., Nov. 18, 2013 -- 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET)
  • Tues., Nov. 26, 2013 -- 12 noon CT (1 p.m. ET)
  • Tues., Nov. 26, 2013 -- 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET)

HR 3204 Vote Pushed to Monday, November 18th

IACP has received word that the HR 3204 vote currently on the Senate floor has been pushed back to Monday, November 18th, 2013. The delay has occurred as the debate continues with Senator Vitter's efforts to have a vote on the healthcare amendment.

In today's CQ Roll Call, it's reported that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid filed a motion this afternoon, "to end debate on compounding pharmacy legislation, while queuing up defense authorization and a judicial nominee for floor action next week."

Says, Reid, “Unless the entire United States Senate bends to that one senator’s wish — the one that voted ‘no’ 97-1 it was — he will force this body to jump through hoops and work through next several days wasting time to finish this crucial drug safety bill."

IACP will continue to keep our members informed of further updates.

Cynthia E. Blankenship, Esq., Joins IACP as Vice President Government Affairs

The International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP) has named Cynthia E. Blankenship, Esq., as its new Vice President of Government Affairs.

In her new IACP role, Blankenship serves as primary contact for Congress, federal and state regulatory agencies and other interests concerning IACP policies and activities associated with its advocacy efforts. Additionally, Ms. Blankenship manages IACP’s Political Action Committee (COMP-PAC) and directly oversees compliance with the Federal Election Commission related federal election laws. Ms. Blankenship works with IACP governance committees and other internal groups to develop a comprehensive strategy and approach to address the legislative and regulatory issues and concerns to compounding pharmacists; and, continually strives to increase the involvement and awareness of IACP and its members in these areas. Ms. Blankenship also is IACP’s point of contact with outside organizations and affiliations on matters of policy affecting compounding pharmacists and their practices.

“I'm looking forward to working with this important sector of the pharmacy profession—the compounding pharmacist,” Blankenship said. “The compounding pharmacist’s ability to individualize medications that ensures the most appropriate dose and delivery system improves compliance, adherence and overall patient health outcomes. The provision of personalized medication solutions is the epitome of a patient-centric approach to health care.”

IACP wishes Sarah Dodge-Palmer, who has accepted a VP of Government Affairs role at the American Wood Council, the very best. We thank Sarah for all of her outstanding efforts on behalf of our membership and pharmacy compounding.

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Reports on New 17-P Study

From the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and what IACP, the FDA and compounding pharmacists have been saying all along: "Compounded Medication to Prevent Preterm Birth Not a Safety Risk, University of Pittsburgh Study Confirms."

Excerpted from this article: ""Contrary to the report provided by the company that markets Makena, we found that 17-OHPC from compounding pharmacies raised no safety concerns about drug potency, sterility or purity," said Steve N. Caritis, M.D., professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Pitt, and the study's corresponding author. Dr. Caritis cautioned, however, that the sample size was small and the findings cannot be applied to all compounded products or pharmacies."

Testing Final Products to Ensure Sterility and Patient Safety

Sterility and media fill testing are critical elements of quality control (QC) microbiology programs for compounding pharmacies. The tests are used to identify contamination of final products, which can be introduced in the production process by infected personnel, unclean surfaces and poor air quality. As such, robust sterility and media fill testing procedures should be implemented to minimize risk of product recall and ensure consumer safety.  Click here to review entire article.
